CHRIS JOHNSTON

Artist Statement

My ceramics explore landscape – its insides and its stories – using research and my own emotional response to place. It is about identity, connection and meaning.

I work from my studio in Central Victoria, looking out on the bush. It is a beautiful and engaging place. I use a combination of altered wheel-thrown forms and handbuilding, with terrasigillata surfaces using local clay, then mid-fired.

Currently, I am making groups of forms, often hollow with the inside hidden from view, echoing the depth of history and story in Australia and how much has been lost or is hidden from our gaze.
